How Personas handles messages about self-harm
Personas is designed not to engage in character with messages about suicide or self-harm. When you send a message in a chat, the App checks it — on your device, before any character reply is generated — for language that may indicate thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
- If such language is detected, the character does not reply in character. Instead, the App shows the crisis resources above.
- This check runs on your device and does not depend on AI being available.
- As an additional safeguard, the AI is instructed never to encourage, instruct, romanticize, or provide methods for self-harm or suicide, and not to respond in character if such thoughts are expressed.
Why we do this
We want Personas to be a source of warmth, not a place where a difficult moment goes unanswered. Showing real crisis resources — and stepping out of the fiction — is the responsible thing to do. But the App cannot assess risk or provide care. Please reach out to the resources above or to people you trust.
